Sam Cox, Merricks

Wetlands Garden, designed and built by Sam Cox, is a contemporary native landscape on rural acreage in Merricks on the Mornington Peninsula, where water is the central, unifying feature. A natural swimming pool and large habitat pond sit side by side, visually connected yet filtered separately, creating both a pristine swim zone and a thriving ecosystem. Granite outcrops and paths connect the house into the coastal hinterland, while a landmark yellow gum anchors the design. Soft native plantings blur pool fencing, frame rural and bay views, and complement the owners’ highly productive food garden, resulting in a tranquil, temple-like garden that celebrates water, habitat, and immersion in place.
