The garden is situated on a sloping suburban block in Junortoun, Bendigo and was designed to compliment the family’s new modern home.

The clients are working professionals who wanted a multifunctional garden. The garden had  to be low maintenance and one that could entertain family and friends all year round.  An important request from the clients was to design a garden that reminded them both of their childhood growing up in Sri Lanka.

The site had a significant slope within the backyard over a small distance. This lead itself to being designed as a multi leveled garden. There are three significant areas within the garden, the pergola, the outdoor kitchen and the large sunken lounge space.

The pergola and deck are made of hardwood timber and are stained a dark colour to suit the timber finishes of the home. A jasmine plant covers the pergola, and with night lighting, makes it a more intimate space. This area leads off the living room which can be opened to double the entertaining space.

Each aspect of the outdoor kitchen has been designed and made by local craftsman. It has steel overheads with slattered timber and lighting and black marble bench tops on either side of the cook top. The front of the kitchen is made from stone work and at either end of the outdoor kitchen, herb gardens have been placed. The whole area has been finished off with random paving.

The sunken lounge is surrounded by ample seating space including a beautifully crafted stone wall and a timber hardwood bench. This is wrapped with plants which provide a private space for the family to entertain.

This is one outdoor living space that will stand the test of time and provide many happy memories for the family.
