Phillip Withers

Established in 2012, Phillip Withers is a landscape architecture and horticulture studio working across Australia. The studio brings together landscape architects, designers and horticulturalists, working as one team from the first ideas through to planting, delivery and ongoing maintenance.

Our work spans private gardens, multi-residential landscapes, hospitality, commercial projects and larger landscape environments. Across each project, we look at the landscape as a whole, considering the architecture, site, materials, planting and, importantly, how the garden will be lived in.

Plants are a fundamental part of the design process. We are interested in gardens that respond to their conditions and surroundings, with planting selected for its character, performance and longevity. Local species, productive plants, established trees and considered material choices all have a role to play.

The studio works closely with clients, architects, builders and specialist trades throughout a project, keeping the design involved from concept through to the finished garden and its ongoing care. This continuity allows the landscape to be considered not just as a finished product, but as something living that develops with its surroundings.

Phillip Withers is also co-author of Naturescapes, written with horticulturalist A.B. Bishop, exploring a more considered approach to Australian gardens through local plants, materials and regenerative thinking.
